2D shooters of this nature were renowned for being tough during the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, and Infestation pays homage to that. They're unique in personality and appearance, yet pack the same arsenal and handle identically.īut you're going to need every one of those soldiers because this is a hugely unforgiving game. There's nothing to distinguish one character from another in terms of attributes. The rest you have to seek out before sending them into battle. There are a total of 19 playable marines, only four of which are available from the start. You'll spend your time blasting enemies, hunting for keycards, and solving simple puzzles. Gameplay is reminiscent of the side-scrolling action titles of old, such as Castlevania and Metroid.

There is no shortage of movie references in here, although the premise essentially amounts to shoot first and ask questions later. You get to play as multiple members of the squad throughout, visiting familiar locations such as the Sulaco ship and the planet VL-426. Infestation takes place in the wake of Alien 3, following a group of marines sent in to deal with the Xenomorph threat. While control issues spoil the party somewhat, there's plenty of challenge on offer and it thankfully ignores the events of Alien Resurrection.
The result is hardly a revolutionary game, but the subject matter fits the genre like a glove.
